Action and Index Spectra and Periodic Orbits in Hamiltonian Dynamics

چکیده
The main theme of this paper is the connection between the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits for a Hamiltonian system and the behavior of its action or index spectrum under iterations. We use the action and index spectra to show that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed, rational manifold with zero first Chern class has infinitely many periodic orbits and that, for a general rational manifold, the number of geometrically distinct periodic orbits is bounded from below by the ratio of the minimal Chern number and half of the dimension. These generalizations of the Conley conjecture follow from another result proved here asserting that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a symplectically degenerate maximum on a closed rational manifold has infinitely many periodic orbits. We also show that for a broad class of manifolds and/or Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms the minimal action–index gap remains bounded for some infinite sequence of iterations and, as a consequence, whenever a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism has finitely many periodic orbits, the actions and mean indices of these orbits must satisfy a certain relation. Furthermore, for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of CP with exactly n + 1 periodic orbits a stronger result holds. Namely, for such a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism, the difference of the action and the mean index on a periodic orbit is independent of the orbit, provided that the symplectic structure on CP is normalized to be in the same cohomology class as the first Chern class.

Drift of slow variables in slow-fast Hamiltonian systems
We study the drift of slow variables in a slow-fast Hamiltonian system with several fast and slow degrees of freedom. For any periodic trajectory of the fast subsystem with the frozen slow variables we define an action. For a family of periodic orbits, the action is a scalar function of the slow variables and can be considered as a Hamiltonian function which generates some slow dynamics. These ...
متن کاملProbing the Local Dynamics of periodic orbits by the generalized Alignment Index (Gali) Method
As originally formulated, the Generalized Alignment Index (GALI) method of chaos detection has so far been applied to distinguish quasiperiodic from chaotic motion in conservative nonlinear dynamical systems. In this paper, we extend its realm of applicability by using it to investigate the local dynamics of periodic orbits. We show theoretically and verify numerically that for stable periodic ...
متن کاملGeometric shadowing in slow-fast Hamiltonian systems
We study a class of slow-fast Hamiltonian systems with any finite number of degrees of freedom, but with at least one slow one and two fast ones. At ε = 0 the slow dynamics is frozen. We assume that the frozen system (i.e. the unperturbed fast dynamics) has families of hyperbolic periodic orbits with transversal heteroclinics. For each periodic orbit we define an action J. This action may be vi...

متن کاملOn the Generic Existence of Periodic Orbits in Hamiltonian Dynamics
We prove several generic existence results for infinitely many periodic orbits of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms or Reeb flows. For instance, we show that a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a complex projective space or Grassmannian generically has infinitely many periodic orbits. We also consider symplectomorphisms of the two-torus with irrational flux. We show that such a symplectomorphism necessar...
